FAQ's: All About The RYA Keelboat Day Sailing Course

How much will the Keelboat Day Sailing cost including exam fees?

Typically the Day Sailing course will cost around $380-$610 / 330-540 EUROS / £250-£400 per person depending on where you take it, what time of the year, and whether you are doing it alone or as part of a group.

What will you get out of this course?

With your skills learned on the RYA Keelboat Levels 1 and 2 courses, you will develop your sailing skills in cruising sailing.

Where many other courses are about racing, this looks at the skills required for a longer jaunt up the coast to a favoured pub or anchorage for lunch. You learn how to get to your destination safely, but not quickly as the racing courses teach you.

What are your limits on passing the Day Sailing course?

You will be capable of a longer cruise in relatively sheltered waters. Keelboats aren’t for crossing the Channel, but shorter jaunts.

Is the course theory, practical or both?

The course is part theory and part practical. You will cover practical skills such as anchoring and mooring, but also theoretical skills such as passage planning and safety techniques.

Where can you take the RYA Keelboat Day Sailing course?

You can take the course anywhere in the world that has RYA accreditation.

Can you do it in another country?

Yes, see above answer.

What level of experience do you need before you begin this?

You should be competent in sailing at all points of sail, tacking, gybing as well as the other skills taught in the RYA Keelboat Level 1 and level 2 courses. You should either have those certificates or demonstrate the competence and experience required to pass them. Have a look at the RYA website for more information.

What's the duration of the course?

2 days, though you can ask for a 3 day course if required for an extra fee.

What does the course involve?

You will take the basic skills learned in the previous courses and focus them towards enjoying a short cruise.

You will learn about reefing under sail and other elements of sailing in more challenging weather conditions. You will cover the theoretical elements of sailing that include navigation, passage planning (to include victualing for a passage) and the Collision Regulations.

You will also look at mooring and anchoring, both under sail and with engine power.

Finally, you will look at safety skills and techniques such as man overboard and taking on water.

How do I progress after completing the RYA Day Sailing course?

You have a choice!

To hone your cruising skills, look to the RYA yacht cruising courses that include the RYA Day Skipper and the Coastal Skipper courses.

To further develop your keelboat skills, have a look at the keelboat racing courses that will refine your sailing skills to a much higher level.

Does it give you international accreditation?

No
