The price to take this course (including any exam fees) will be around $450/ £300 / 400 EUROS depending on where and at what time of year you choose to do it.
You will learn the things that will get you home without calling on outside help. You will look at reefing, anchoring, pilotage as well as man overboard and other minor situations you are likely to face in your keelboat sailing career.
The course will teach you to be more independent, and perhaps more confident about sailing around the coast on a short trip. You will learn techniques that if observed will get everyone home in one piece without resorting to calling the rescue services.
The seamanship skills course is part theory and part practical. You may be lucky enough never to use a man overboard drill in anger, but having that in your portfolio of skills will mean you use it if you ever need it.
You can take this course anywhere in the world with RYA accreditation to teach it. Click the button below this page to find your nearest school.
You should have sailing skills equivalent to the standard of the RYA level 2 and Level 3, or the RYA Competent Crewe course.
The duration of the keelboat seamanship skills course is 2 days, consecutively. In total there will be 15 hours tuition.
You will cover launching and recovering the boat in different situations, anchoring, and man overboard drills. You will also cover reefing the sails should the winds build, and sea sense that will enable you to make the decision to go home before things get hairy.
You will learn how to heave-to at sea – using the sails to stop the boat, which can be invaluable in some situations.
Consider the RYA Keelboat Day Sailing course or other improvers and advanced courses run by the RYA.
No, it will however prove your experience.
